The Curious Case Of The Blackberry That Did Not Make The List....
A quick glance at the nutritional label on this page indicates that a one cup serving of Blackberries has a great deal of Vitamin C, and a smattering of other common nutrient compounds.
However, Blackberries are not on any of the "best foods" lists that we often refer to at PEERtrainer. You will not find them at whfoods.com, high on Dr. Fuhrman's list. They did not make the 150 Healthiest Foods by Jonny Bowden.
But they do appear VERY high on a list developed by the USDA, which measures total "antioxidant capacity."
On this list, Blackberries have an "ORAC" score of 7700. To put this in context, Blueberries have an ORAC score of 9000.
Given how little we know about the properties of food, we have to go on what we do know. We know that Blackberries contain Vitamins and Minerals, which have proven benefit. We also know that foods considered high in antioxidants are good for you and Blackberries fit that.
Our general view of things at PEERtrainer is that you will get different nutrients from different foods. You want to learn as much as you can about what nutrients your body needs, and where you can get it.
