Online Nutrition Degree Programs

Increased emphasis on diet and its effect on health has led to a growing interest in nutrition. Career training as a nutritionist can help you benefit from this interest, while helping people improve their health.

From communities banning trans fats to new requirements for calorie information in restaurants, individuals and governments are taking action to better acknowledge the link between what people put into their bodies and the physical and medical impact of nutrition. Nutritionists are essential to advancing this understanding.
Critical Role for Nutritionists

Good nutrition is like maintaining a car correctly: you can head off a host of more serious problems just by doing the right thing on a day-to-day basis. Nutritionists help people make the right decisions about what they eat and drink, and this can help address a number of serious health care issues:

Obesity. Out-of-control calorie counts and reduced levels of physical activity have led to an epidemic of obesity in the United States. Most distressingly, this is increasingly affecting children. Often, obesity is driven by long-term bad habits that a nutritionist can help correct.
Diabetes. Like obesity, diabetes is on the rise. People's diets are often too heavily weighted toward sugar, or things that break down into sugars in the body. This can result in, or exacerbate, diabetes.
Heart disease. As with diabetes, heart disease can be affected not only by how much we put into our bodies, but what we choose to put in. Again as with diabetes, it is not always obvious which foods have hidden dangers. In the case of heart disease, it is cholesterol counts that are crucial, and this is the type of information nutritionists analyze and pass along to their patients.

Career Training in Nutrition Can Benefit You as Well as Others

Becoming a nutritionist generally involves earning a bachelor's degree in one or more of a variety of disciplines. These disciplines include dietetics, foods and nutrition, or food service management. Most states also have specific licensing requirements, so it is wise to check out your state's qualification and accreditation standards before proceeding with a degree program.

Nutritionists may help people one-on-one, as health care counselors. Alternatively, they may help groups of people, by helping design institutional nutrition programs, or by guiding food companies in the creation of healthier product lines.

Perhaps the primary beneficiary of your career training in nutrition will be you. Knowledge is power, and having a detailed knowledge of nutrition will give you an inside track on developing eating habits that could allow you to live a longer and healthier life.
Employment for Nutritionists

Employment growth for nutritionists is expected to be about average in the years to come, but nutritionists do earn above-average incomes. In 2007, the median annual income for nutritionists was $50,030. Most were employed by various health care services, but management or education and research roles can be especially lucrative.

Diet-related health issues are not going to go away easily, so it is likely that nutritionists will play a valuable role in the health care system for many years to come.

Online Nutrition Degree Program School Requirements

The Internet has opened up a whole new world of educational opportunities for people all over the world. An online nutrition degree will prepare people seeking to work in the field of human nutrition to do just that. Bachelors, masters and graduate certificates in human nutrition can all be earned online.
Types of Degrees
Bachelors

Prior to taking the licensing exams that are required by some states in order to work as a nutritionist, a bachelors degree is absolutely necessary. An online bachelors degree in nutrition is offered by only a few colleges and universities.
Masters

Masters degrees in human nutrition, public health nutrition and holistic health can be earned by attending college online. Some states require licensing or registration to practice as a nutritionist or dietician.
Certificate Programs

Certificate programs in nutrition consulting and applied clinical nutrition can be earned online at a limited number of colleges.
Universities and Free Information

Grand Canyon University

Kaplan University

Ashford University

South University
Online and Hybrid Programs
Online

Online degrees without any residence time on campus are offered for all degree levels. Some schools have classes in real-time and all students in a cohort travel through a series of classes together. Other schools record lessons and students can watch the lessons when it is convenient.

Pros
A degree in nutrition earned completely online has overridden the stigma online degrees once carried; but, it is very important to graduate from a college or university with an accredited program. Taking classes online gives people maximum flexibility and allows those who may not have had access to higher education a chance to fulfill their educational goals. Online educational programs also tend to be less expensive than their on-campus counterparts.

Cons
Lack of face-to-face contact with professors and other students is one drawback of attending college online. A completely online degree requires a great deal of personal motivation and self-discipline. For people who need outside accountability, a totally online degree may not be the best option.
Hybrid

For the person who wants the flexibility of an online college program and the direct contact with fellow students and teachers, the hybrid type of educational delivery may be just right.

Pros
A hybrid-style online degree affords students some of the flexibility of the completely online degree, while at the same time giving students and teachers a chance to interact on a monthly or weekly basis. In this way, the hybrid online degree is the best of both worlds.

Cons
If work or family responsibilities are difficult to arrange your college schedule around, the hybrid type of degree may not be the right fit. Mandatory in-class time usually occurs around the schedule of the teacher, not necessarily the students.
Accreditation

In order to become a licensed nutritionist-dietician, it is very important that any college or university the student attends must be accredited with one of the six regional accreditation agencies.
6 Regional Accreditation Agencies

The United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognize six regional accrediting agencies. Any school accredited by one of the six agencies assures future employers and others that the graduate attended a school that met at least the minimum required standards necessary to work as a nutritionist or dietician.

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the Northwestern Association of Schools and Colleges (NWSCU), the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA), the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSASC) and the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SASC) make up the six regional accreditation agencies in the United States. Each of these regional agencies is responsible for the accreditation of the states in that region, as well as the various countries outside the United States that it is assigned.
Distance Education and Training Council (DETC)

An optional accreditation program that some colleges and universities offering distance education decide to apply for it the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) accreditation. The DETC is a recognized accrediting agency approved by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Potential students should be concerned if a school is not accredited by one of the regional agencies. Beware of schools with accreditations from other organizations. A few schools attempt to appear to have accreditation but in reality have simply paid for a stamp of approval without being vetted, or could have even established their own accrediting agency. Be sure to thoroughly investigate any accreditation a college claims to have.
Courses of Study
High School

Students in grades 9-12 who are interested in a career in nutrition should take a variety of classes. Science and maths, as well as food science and any health classes offered by the school are also important classes to do well in.
College

General foundational courses are required of all students enrolled at a given university. In addition to these general courses, a student working towards a degree in nutrition will take science classes centered around biochemistry, vitamins, and other food science topics.
Employment Outlook, Working Conditions, Salary
Job Outlook

Jobs for trained nutritionists are expected to grow about as fast as other jobs, about 9% between 2008 and 2018.. In 2008, 60,300 people worked as dieticians or nutritionists. About 50% of all jobs in this field are in hospitals and long-term care facilities, as well as doctors’ offices and outpatient care centers.

Individuals who possess an advanced degree and/or certifications over and above the state’s minimum requirements will have the best chance of getting a job. Those without bachelors degrees will have the most difficulty finding employment in this field.
Salary

The average salary for a nutrtionist is $51,470. Nutritionists in employment services earned about $66,230, while those in medical and diagnostic laboratories earned $58,720. The highest paying states included Connecticut with an annual average wage of $62,260 and Hawaii with an average annual wage of $59,390. The top paying metropolitan area for nutritionists is Bethesda-Gaithersburg-Fredrick Maryland with an average salary of $83,320.

Online nutrition degrees allow anyone who has the motivation to earn the academic credentials necessary to secure a well-paying job. Online nutrition degrees, particularly at the graduate level, are an excellent way to advance one’s career.

Learning about Health Has Never Been
Easier or More Useful

When you study with the Global College of Natural Medicine and receive an online holistic nutrition certificate, not only will your career options expand with a nutritional consultant training offering you a brighter future, but you will also be healthier, happier and quite possibly wealthier. Let me explain why. My name is Dr. Johnstone and I am the Director of the Global College (GCNM).

The Threat Hanging over Our Heads

Most Americans are not aware of a very powerful threat hanging over our heads. It’s not terrorism, oil shortages or some other political issue. The clearest and most pressing danger lies in the fact that every second American has at least one chronic illness as we speak, while 60 million people suffer from multiple chronic conditions. Despite advances in modern medicine our health is worse today than ever before in our history! There is no doubt that sickness affects us directly, causing untold suffering and hardship. I’m here to tell you how the situation got so bad and how a learning about holistic nutrition can help you do something about it. Please read on.

partnership picIn the year 2000, the U.S. population was 276 million. Nearly half of the population – 125 million Americans – lived with some type of chronic condition. About 60 million lived with multiple chronic conditions. Examples of chronic conditions are diabetes, cancer, glaucoma and heart disease. The number of people with chronic conditions is growing at an alarming rate.format image

So Why Are We Sick?

I’ll be brutally honest here so there are no misunderstandings: We get sick because our lack of health is economically profitable for a lot of big companies and shareholders. This includes:

The food industry with all the ‘designer’ junk foods and beverages that hold no nutritional value and actually make us fat and sick
image 10
All the polluting industries that fill our lives and bodies with harmful chemicals and toxins
image 10
The ‘sick care’ industry that figured out long ago that there’s a lot more money to be made in treating symptoms with drugs and surgeries in expensive hospitals than in patient education, prevention and natural medicine.

There’s a lot of money to be made in making and keeping us sick. As professor Paul Zane Pilzer explains in his best-selling book, The Wellness Revolution: “Incredibly powerful economic forces are preventing people from taking control of their health and actually encouraging them to gain weight – forces so powerful that nothing short of a revolution will be able to stop them.” ref image

laszlokorinnaSince birth we’ve been bombarded with millions of ads that turn us into happily paying consumers of the very things that make us sick. Now the only way for us to become and stay healthy for life is to train ourselves to see through all the commercial deception and brainwashing, and learn how to be healthy. This is what we teach in the nutritional consultant program at the Global College.

We cannot expect a solution from those who don’t have our best interest at heart. We have to take matters into our own hands. And when we learn how to take care of ourselves and our loved ones with holistic nutrition certification, we learn something equally important at the same time: How to help the other half of the population that is constantly and chronically ill.

Wellness - The Biggest Opportunity of The 21st Century

Professor Pilzer defines the wellness industry as the next big boom that will revolutionize our lives.

“We are now at the very beginning of the next trillion dollar industry”, he writes in The Wellness Revolution, “an industry that will impact almost every aspect of our lives and achieve $1 trillion in sales within 10 years, but one that is as unknown today as the automobile industry was in 1908 or the personal computer industry was in 1981.

wellness revolution image“In order to define the wellness industry and identify its opportunities, we must first distinguish it from a related industry based on some of the same technology – the current $1.5 trillion ( U.S. ) healthcare industry. … Healthcare is a misnomer, as this one seventh of the economy is really devoted to the sickness business... The sickness business is reactive. Despite its enormous size, people become customers only when they are stricken by and react to a specific condition or ailment. No one really wants to be a customer.

“In the next 10 years, an additional $1 trillion of the U.S. economy will be devoted to the yet-unnamed wellness business… The wellness business is proactive. People voluntarily become customers – to feel healthier, to reduce the effects of aging, and to avoid becoming customers of the sickness business. Everyone wants to be a customer of this earlier stage approach to health.” image ref

Join The Revolution – Enroll in the Online Nutritional Consultant Program with GCNM

As pointed out earlier, powerful forces are preventing us from taking control of our health and actually encouraging us to eat unhealthy, gain weight and smother ourselves in toxic chemicals. These forces are so powerful that only a revolution will be able to stop them.

Professor Pilzer: “The emerging wellness industry is as much a reaction to the tyranny of the sickness and the food industries as it is to every person’s desire for the freedom wellness offers. Wellness is the next natural step forward in our destiny and in the advancement of humankind.

“The revolutionary leaders in wellness are the entrepreneurs who grow and procreate wellness, the inventors who instigate wellness services and products, and the practitioners and distributors who carry the wellness message throughout society. Take your pick of how you want to be a leader of this new industry.” image ref

Wellness or Sickness – Your Choice

sickness imageThe time has come to choose which side you want to be on: Wellness or sickness? We all have a purpose to serve on this beautiful planet. You can either choose to actively pursue nutritional consultant certification and seek out solutions, continually nourishing your body and reviving your spirit – or you can remain passive about the potential perils lurking around us, gradually losing your life energy until sickness finally catches up with you.

If you don’t make a decision, the choice will be made for you by the financially motivated food, chemical and drug companies or by the media addicted to advertisement dollars. But will that serve your benefit?

Food Matters Documentary

James PictureWe are graduates from the GCNM Nutritional Consultant course. Prior to enrolling, we thoroughly researched the internet for a college of natural medicine that was to provide us with solid and independently researched information. The GCNM NC course was exactly that and the quality of their curriculum and student support exceeded our expectations.

We were so inspired and impressed with the content of the course that we immediately started applying this information to our own lives. We were astonished that such life-transforming information was not more widely known and practiced. During our studies we decided on focusing on how to share this knowledge with people around the world, so that billions could powerfully transform and improve their lives. We’ve always believed that with access to solid information, people will invariably make good choices for their health.

We thus decided to film a documentary on nutrition and curing disease naturally. Since graduating in May 2007 we headed off around the globe interviewing many of the authors and teachers we studied while undergoing the GCNM NC course. We now have the trailer to our film Food Matters online and the feature film will be available soon.

Without the knowledge we aquired while studying the NC course we would have not been able to undertake such a venture and thank the team at GCNM for their wonderful support.

So I did a search on Yahoo for 'holistic' and among other things, I found GCNM. It jumped out at me and after finding the HHP program and reading all over the website, I felt like I received the answer to my prayer! All the subjects in the curriculum are either topics I have been interested in and researched on my own for the last 20 years or topics I am interested in learning about.

When I received all my course materials, I felt like I had opened a treasure chest - all the books and reference materials look amazing!

My friends and co-workers know that I love to learn about healing and holistic treatments and they often come to me for advice which I LOVE! I always thought 'I wish I could do this for a living' - and now I can! When I mentioned to my chiropractor (who has a holistic practice) that I was starting this course, without missing a beat he said 'Oh we'll give you an office here when you're ready - I'd love to see you every day!' Just another sign to me that I truly am being lead on the right path for my life!

I am so excited to focus all my free time on school - I feel like a sponge and want to absorb every bit of information that I can!.."

"It is an understatement, to say that the growth of my business would not have been possible had I not enrolled with the Global College of Natural Medicine"

toni picture"My husband and I retired to Costa Rica late in 2003. Soon after we arrived, I realized that there were no herbal tinctures in this country, only pills. I then found a wonderful organic herb farm among the coffee plantations in the mountains near where we live. I bought a kilo of Echinacea purpurea and a big bottle of 190 proof alcohol from a friend of a friend who had a still. That was almost three years ago. Today, my company, Natural Herbal Tinctures (www.naturalherbaltinctures.com) is developing into a full time business. The changes since I made my initial batch of Echinacea tincture in Santa Fe, NM to my business now in Costa Rica are nothing short of amazing. It is an understatement, to say that the growth of my business would not have been possible had I not enrolled with the Global College of Natural Medicine.

The professionalism, exceptional knowledge, constant support, patience and tireless efforts from student support, the faculty (my unending questions regarding the circumnavigation of the forum), Tara in admissions who went above and beyond what she needed to do and the personal support from Dr. Lynn Hardy, GCNM Director have collectively contributed to my success.

Even after years of tincturing, without Global College of Natural Medicine, I would not be as confidant as I am in my knowledge of herbal medicine nor would I feel comfortable having the enormous opportunity ahead of me to educate and introduce (both in English and Spanish!) my herbal tinctures to so many people.

"The best part of the program
is the student support"

Andhrika Picture"GCNM courses are quite interesting, informative and affordable. It is very convenient to study at my own pace. The subjects covered are broad in regard to the many aspects of Holistic Health and give a good overview. The best part of the program is the student support that consists of direct interaction with expert faculty who guide in every aspect of the program; they are just a click away."
